After the interview season concludes, applicants and residency programs complete ranking. The process of ranking is done through submission of preferences via Rank Order Lists ROL to national match system organizations.
These match systems then run their respective matching algorithms to assign applicants and residency programs to one another. In the matching process, a residency position is secured when there is a match between the applicant and program preference.
The Match is a binding agreement. If a program is on your ROL, it means that you are committed to going to that program if you match there. Subsequently, it is important to carefully consider all of the factors and your priorities when compiling your rank list s.
Ranking is done differently in each of the matching systems. To learn more about each system, visit Match Systems. The only applicants who will create a supplemental list are those who are also matching to an advanced program through the NRMP. In the NRMP system, any two applicants can link their rank order lists together in order to be considered as a pair.
This process is referred to as the Couples Match. A couple will match to the most preferred pair of programs on their rank order lists where each partner has been offered a position. Communicating with programs During the time leading up to submitting your rank order list, programs may reach out to you to let you know about their interests or ranking intentions. While programs are permitted to share how they will rank an applicant, programs are not permitted to ask an applicant how they will rank their program.
The same applies for applicants. You can share your interest in a program and how you will rank a program, but you cannot ask how a program will rank you.
Doing so is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement. Your decision on how to rank a program should not be influenced by whether a particular program will rank you high, low, or not at all. The position of a program on an applicant's rank order list will not affect the applicant's position on a program's rank order list; these lists are confidential for both parties.
Additionally, where you are ranking a program is not something you are obligated to share with a program. Need more information?
