I believe the latin is AF, for Annu Ford-ine. I'm no latin expert so the spelling is probably wrong, but your translation is correct. I can live with it. It is actually teaching me to double clutch :. Chris, I have only autocrossed the car twice, and I really don't consider that hard on a car anyway.
I drive "enthusiastically", but I don't think I am hard on cars. The WRX tranny is just dissapointing when compared to the rest of the car which is a great package.
The dealer sent his A1, top mechanic out to test drive the car and he didn't even make it off the lot. He saw that it was grinding going into first from a stop and also on the downshift. Gave me no problems and it was all fixed and "good as new" in a week.
I've known two people who had 3rd gear synchros go out in Camaros, one who road raced a 3rd gen and one who probably did it while dragging his 4th gen. It's my understanding that WRXs have rather weak gearboxes, which can become especially apparent if one starts upping the boost.
IIRC, the 5-speed gearbox is an older design that is really only adequate for stock power levels and still doesn't take kindly to aggressive driving. Originally posted by davidb Chris, I have only autocrossed the car twice, and I really don't consider that hard on a car anyway. That's exactly how I would plan to drive the car so I guess I'll scratch the WRX off my wish list unless they fix the problem.
I wouldn't mind losing a syncro during the warantee period but I'm not convinced the new syncro wouldn't go the way of the first one eventually. I've heard a lot of complaints about the WRX gearbox and I was wondering how much of it was from folks with unrealistic expectations people who expect a gearbox to last through a lifetime of smokey burnouts at every stop light and how much was reasonable usage.
I'm slowly losing the 3rd gear synchro on my car I passed on a nice 96M loved the Starlight Blue! If you don't know how to match revs yourself the synchros don't last as long.
The donor Miata transmission for my Seven had absolutely no synchros on 2nd. The car was in a wreck and I suspect it was in 2nd at the time. I have 3 stick cars and a big rig with an 18 speed and love running through the gears.

A mechanic isn't going to separate the engine from the transmission to check the clutch or synchros. Generally, an easy way to check for clutch slippage is to apply wide open throttle in a high gear. If the clutch doesn't slip, it's probably in decent condition. And if the synchros aren't grinding in any gear, they're probably in good shape too. Basically, everything you need to know about the transmission will be pretty evident during your normal driving.

Unless the previous owner was totally oblivious to driving a manual, your clutch is fine. Your synchros should be lasting you the life of the car unless you shift without the clutch all the time.
